  2. 2

The District Six Museum, housed in the former Methodist Mission Church, pays tribute to the vibrant, multicultural suburb that existed there before apartheid destroyed it. This Cape Town museum aims to offer a fresh perspective on the past while reestablishing a connection with the communal spirit.

  3. 3

Despite Pretoria being the seat of administration, Parliament meets at the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town. This goes all the way back to the Union's founding, when the four provinces couldn't agree on which city should serve as the nation's capital. Bloemfontein was assigned as the judicial capital, Pretoria as the administrative capital, and Cape Town as the legislative capital as a compromise.

  4. 4

Originally constructed as a refreshment stop for traders traveling between Europe and the East around the tip of Africa, the Company's Garden served that purpose. After months at sea, ships dispatched by the Dutch East India Company would dock and replenish their supplies of fresh vegetables from the garden, thus the name "The Company's Garden." Within the garden, there is a plethora of historical information to discover. A statue of Queen Victoria and a statue of Jan Smuts are located close to the Adderley Street entrance, with the former overlooking the Slave Lodge. The St. George's Cathedral, also referred to as the "people's church," is located just across the street. All races were welcomed there even throughout the apartheid era. It also served as the gathering place for the 30,000 demonstrators under the direction of Archbishop Desmond.

  5. 5

Built primarily between 1760 and 1840, Bo-Kaap is a tiny, historic residential neighborhood in Cape Town that was home to several Muslims and freed slaves. It is now one of Cape Town's most Instagrammable neighborhoods with its vibrantly painted homes and a must-visit, not to mention for the flavorful Cape Malay food.

  6. 6

Local artist Michael Elion created a massive pair of stainless steel Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses in memory of the late South African president. The big, stylish sunglasses are positioned so that you can see Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent almost three decades in jail, across the Atlantic Ocean.

  7. 7

Visit the man-made facilities, which are well-known for housing socially unsuitable groups for the past 500 years and for being a maximum security jail. Discover the history of how the island was used to isolate South African leaders, including Jacob Zuma, Kgalema Motlanthe, and Nelson Mandela, as well as freedom fighters. A variety of bird species, including the African penguin, can be found on the island.
