Singapore’s hawker culture is known for its concept of affordable, cross-cultural, freshly cooked meals sold in community dining rooms, and was listed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020. This walk gives you a taste of the local Singaporean experience with a series of handpicked hawker dishes that reflect the vibrant, unique flavours that set Singapore’s blended cultural landscape apart from the rest of Asia.

Chinatown is more than just a colourful neighbourhood with beautiful roadside stores. Learn about the history of the first settlers who moved to Chinatown, from the Cantonese merchants on Pagoda Street to the death houses on Sago Lane. You’ll uncover one of the communities that built Singapore’s food culture from scratch and got it listed as a UNESCO treasure today.

Expect to navigate tight backstreets filled with hidden stories: from the alleys painted by Yip Yew Chong to the Ann Siang Hill conservation area, and past subtle yet iconic filming locations from Crazy Rich Asians. You'll stop inside the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, one of the most significant Mahayana Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, and feast on 9-10 of your guide's handpicked dishes at Maxwell Food Centre and beyond, from chicken rice to Fuzhou oyster pancakes. Join us on an empty stomach and leave with a better understanding of Singapore’s hawker food history through the palette.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Sri Mariamman Temple

Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, a prominent figure in Singapore's Indian community, and recognised as a National Monument for its architectural and historical significance. The elaborately painted gopuram tower is one of the most striking sights in Chinatown.

  2. 2

    Ann Siang Hill

Once a bustling business hub for Chinese immigrants, Ann Siang Hill retains its historical and architectural charm through beautifully restored terrace shophouses, that also housed clan associations and secret societies long gone.

  3. 3

    Maxwell Food Centre

Feast on 9-10 local dishes at one of Singapore’s famous hawker centres, recommended by your guide.

  4. 4

    Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

Built in the style of Tang Dynasty architecture, this is one of Southeast Asia's most significant Mahayana Buddhist sites. The sacred relic housed within draws pilgrims from across the region. On the way, your guide will take you past Sago Lane, once known as the "street of the dead," where the elderly came to spend their final days under the care of clan associations.

  5. 5

    Chinatown Complex

A repository of architectural heritage and living hawker culture. The complex was built to resettle the street hawkers who once pushed carts through Chinatown's congested roads, preserving the neighbourhood's food character without losing its soul. Today it remains one of the best places in Singapore to eat like a local.

  6. 6

Hidden Alleys, Murals & Nanyang Old Coffee

Duck into the back lanes, past the murals of Yip Yew Chong, whose life-size street paintings capture scenes of old Singapore with extraordinary detail. The stop ends at Nanyang Old Coffee, a traditional kopitiam, where coffee beans are still roasted and ground in the old way.
