Watch the Bat, Preah Ang Chek Preah Ang Chom at Royal Residence Garden
This was here that King Sihanouk and General Lon Nol plotted Cambodia’s independence from their French colonial overlords in the 1950s. At the other end of the gardens, the King and Lon Nol would look out to see the largest colonial-style hotel built during the French occupation (Raffles Grand d’Angkor Hotel) while they sat in their French-made residence – maybe they used this as their inspiration! Present day, the park has become a very popular spot for both locals and tourists to spend some time outside with their friends and families. There are gardens, a pagoda, shrines, bats, a river, exercise classes, a tourist information centre and a cafe. Everything you need to spend a few hours relaxing and enjoying the park.

Wat Damnak pagoda
Wat Damnak is the largest pagoda in Siem Reap. When it was first built, it was King Sisowath’s palace before it was moved to its current location. After the king moved out, it transformed into a pagoda for the public use. During the Khmer Rouge era, all religion was abolished. The pagoda was used as a military base for the Khmer Rouge. After the fall of the Pol Pot regime, it was again used a Buddhist pagoda. Present day, it’s a working pagoda and many monks live here. It’s also home to a public primary school, the Centre for Khmer studies and the Life and Hope Organisation. Many tourists enjoy visiting Wat Damnak and exploring the large grounds.
